He joined the Cahaba Baptist Church (now known as the 1st Baptist Church)at Cahaba, Jefferson county, Alabama on 1 Nov 1924. He served as missionary for several years in Cosa River Baptist Church Association around 1834. By 1836 he was a licensed minister. James became a pastor of the Mt. Zion Baptist (now 1st. Baptist Church of Springville, Alabama), and remained until after the Civil War.
He preached his last sermon during a meeting at Mesquite Baptist Church, Aug. 22, 1882, standing near one hour. He passed the next day at the home of his son-in-law, J. H. Smith, at the age of 83 years.
