Daughter of John Woodhull Bergen and Catharine V. Vanderbilt.

The grave stone transcription records of The First Reformed Church indicated that Catharine J. Bergen died on August 1, 1815, age 1 year, 1 month at the time of her death. Those records also indicate that she was the daughter of Catharine V. (born in 1807) and John W. Bergen (born in 1808). The date of birth implied for Catharine J. Bergen by those records is 1814, a year during which her parents would have been 6 or 7 years old, a clear impossibility.

THE BERGEN FAMILY: or the Descendants of Hans Hansen Bergen, One of the Early Settlers of NY and Brooklyn, Long Island. By Teunis G. Bergen. Albany, NY: Joel Munsell (1876), at p. 476 (Seventh Generation), states the following:

"524. John W. Bergen, b. June 28th, 1808; m. Oct. 22d, 1831, Catharine V. Vanderbilt, b. March 22d, 1807; d. Dec. 15th, 1844....

Issue: -

739. VI Catharine Jane, b. April 3, 1844, d. Aug. 20, 1845."

The dates of birth and death for Catharine Jane in this memorial reflect the dates in that genealogical treatise. The date of death for Catharine Jane and her mother Catharine V. are only 4 months apart. The fact that both of their names are inscribed on the same monument makes the August, 1845 date of death for Catharine J. plausible.
