Benjamin was the son of Jacob Pruyn Van Alen and Mary Gazzam Taylor Van Alen. He attended public and private schools at Bergen, New Jersey. In 1864, he embarked in the wholesale drug business in New York City and remained there until 1886. For the next 16-years, he was the resident western agent for a large perfumery manufacturing firm and moved with his family to Chicago, Illinois. In July 1902, he became the western representative of a large chemical manufacturing firm located in Mannheim, Germany. He retired in 1928. Benjamin served in the Fourth Regiment, New Jersey National Guard from 1867 to 1873, and was a life member of its Veterans' Association. He served three terms as president of the Holland Society of Chicago and two terms as vice-president of the Holland Society of New York. He was a trustee of the Hudson County Historical Society for many years. In 1902, Benjamin authored and published 'Genealogical History of the Van Alen Family'. He was a member of Illinois Society Sons of the American Revolution, a director of Chicago Drug Trade club, and president of the Board of Trustees of the First Presbyterian Church of Lake View, Chicago. He was formally named elder-emeritus of the consistory of Old Bergen Reformed Church in 1928. For a number of years, he was a member of the public morals committee of the General Synod of the Reformed Church of America. He married to Fannie More on 18 December 1873 at Bergen, New Jersey in a ceremony performed by his grandfather, Reverend Benjamin C. Taylor. Their children were Edna Child, Walter Taylor, and Harold Knickerbocker. She died in 1909. He next married to Ida Hopping on 10 September 1912.
