Goolie Vanel Harris was born on November 24, 1891 in Todd County, Kentucky, the son of J Shakleford Harris (1863–1926) and Francis (Greenfield) Harris (1868–1955).
He was married in 1913 to Julia Elizabeth Cox (1896–1984), and she was the daughter of George Washington Cox (1875–1961) and Nancy Prudence (Wilson) Cox (1877–1951).
A farmer in rural Elkton, Todd County, he was 60 years old and married when he died at home of Hodgkin's Disease on July 23, 1952. Burial was the next day in Stokes Chapel Cemetery, Elkton.
