He was the second child of Joseph and Edna O'Brien. He started as a stock boy for his father's grocery store which later became an A&P. A business major in the Penn State University Class of 1943, he was a member of the golf team and ROTC. He was commissioned a 2nd Lt. in the 11th Airborne (Co. E/188th GIR) upon early graduation and given 8 hours to report for duty and training at Camp MacKall in the North Carolina backwoods, he jumped into New Guinea, was involved in the fighting for Manila, Philippines where he earned the Bronze Star for directing fire onto enemy positions while remaining under fire himself, and was preparing for the invasion of Japan when the war ended. He was on the second US plane to land in Japan at Atsugi Airdrome. He was assigned to Gen. McArthur's Guard Unit and Stationed at Camp Loeper under the command of General Robert "Shorty" Souel. After acquiring the necessary points, he returned to US in Feb. 1946 as a Captain (Co. I/188th GIR). He married Eunice Crum of Altoona, PA. He returned to work for A&P rising through the offices to become Chief Auditor and was the corporate Comptroller at time of death. He continued to play golf though the years, playing in the Greater Hartford Open in 1980. He is survived by his wife Eunice , their daughters (Patricia and Nancy) and 2 grandchildren (Mark W. Maxwell,Jr. and Lisa Amatruda). Following his death, his grandchildren increased to James Maxwell, John Amatruda and Robert Amatruda.
