Lewis Bowne was born in Crawford, New York, on November 23, 1909, to Abram Van Wyck Bowne and his wife Eva (Lewis) Bowne. They were descendants of William Bowne of Yorkshire, England, who settled in Salem, Massachusetts and then moved to Long Island, New York in 1644. When Lewis was still a small boy, the family moved to Brookings County, South Dakota where he grew to manhood.
John Neuberger and his wife Gesina (Ludemann) Neuberger came from Ackley, Iowa to a farm north of Willow Lake in 1915. Their daughter Mary was born there on March 3,1916. She had an older sister, Ruth and a brother Vernon. Lewis Bowne and Mary Neuberger were married July 16, 1939. They lived on farms in the Willow Lake area until 1958 when they moved to Woodland Township. They have four sons.
