The third of five children, he grew up on a cattle ranch in Lookingglass, Oregon. He graduated in 1964 from Douglas High School in Winston, Oregon.

In 1965, Michael volunteered to join the United States Marine Corps and served in Vietnam. He served on 38 patrols as an infantryman and was promoted multiple times in the field. Soon, he found himself controlling an entire Howitzer Fire Team on a bare mountain top in East Vietnam. He received the Meritorious Commendation. He returned stateside in 1967 and graduated from Non-Commissioned Officer School at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. He was honorably discharged, a Staff Sergeant, in 1968.

He married Janet Ann Cottam on December 29, 1972 and settled in West Salem. Their marriage was solemnized later in the Oakland California Temple, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.

He moved his family to the Salt Creek area near Dallas in 1980 where five of his children were raised. In 2002, Janet and Mike moved to Dallas proper.

Michael received his Bachelor of Arts from George Fox University and made his career in business management and construction. He always felt the need to be working and productive. Even in retirement, he worked as a security manager at Holiday Tree Farms.

In his enormous and generous heart, all friends and animals were his family. He had an uncommon love for family, animals, the outdoors and farming. He loved the life of running cattle, working in the stockyards, working the land with his farm equipment and sharing his fond memories.

Michael will be remembered most for his uncommon passion for serving other people. Aside from his large and growing family, his acts of anonymous kindness and selfless love are his legacy.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Ardell and Jeanette and his brother, Jack.

He is survived by his loving wife Janet; his children Leisa (Murray) Stewart, Corey (Traci) Blackburn, Molly Cady, Adam (Destiny) Loerts, Megan (Shervin Nourparvar) Loerts, and Lincoln Loerts; his grandchildren Logan, Madison, Sophia, Nyles, Myah, Baily, Kiercy, Jack, and grand-baby Loerts-Nourparvar; his sisters, Beverly and Susan; his brother Martin; and many nieces, nephews and friends. Last but not least, his ever-present, loyal canine companion, Stella Ann Loerts.

Services will be held at 11a.m. on Saturday, February 25, 2012 at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, Dallas 1st Ward, 1401 SW 13th St.
