Maurice "Morey" Applen, 70, of Rochester, died Tuesday, May 27, 2014, at Mayo Clinic Hospital-Rochester, Saint Marys Campus.

Maurice Benjamin Applen was born May 2, 1944, in Harmony to Ole and Ethel Viola (Wold) Applen. Morey graduated from Harmony High School in 1965.

On Feb. 20, 1971, he married Mary Swanson at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church in Rochester. They lived in Rochester for four years and then moved to the family farm in Harmony. In 1979, they moved to Elgin, and then in 2009 moved to their present home in Rochester.

Morey worked for Trachsel Dental Lab in Rochester, retiring in 2013 after 40 years of employment. He was a longtime musician and played with The Buzz Hackman Band, Jim and the Country Lads, Beaver's Gang, Summer Winde, Country Cousins and Nite Lites. Morey and Mary loved to travel. They camped throughout the United States and traveled to Mexico, Hawaii, Caribbean Islands, Alaska, Africa, Italy, Norway, Sweden, Germany, Turkey, Egypt and Greece.

He is survived by his wife, Mary of Rochester; sons, James (Kea) of Rochester and Joel (Jessica) of Pine Island; grandchildren, Rachel, Allison, Katelyn and Tyler; and two brothers, Robert of Burnsville and Dennis of Harmony.

Morey was preceded in death by his parents, one son, Jason Robert, and one brother, Allan.

The funeral service will be 11 a.m. Monday at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church between Plainview and Elgin with the Rev. Dick Rehfeldt officiating. Burial is at the Elgin Cemetery. Visitation is from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday at the Schad & Zabel Funeral Home in Plainview and one hour prior to the service at the church on Monday.
