moved to Vernon twp in the 1840s from New York; living with his sister, Persis Stewart, working his farm (sec 27). His brother joined him in Vernon Twp in 1878 working a nearby farm (sec 34) which had been started by Samuel Harding. William was a civic leader in the new township holding office as clerk, treasurer, highway commissioner and school board member. His obituary in the Owosso Times reported he served in the US military during the War of 1812 and that he was a Free Mason for over 60 years. He mustered in to the 1st Mich Volunteer Infantry Regiment at the Detroit barracks in Dec 1846 for assignment in the Mexican War. His death at age 96 was reported in the Owosso Times of 8/31/1887. {credit to Len Thomas for finding the obituary.}
