Luther Peet Lyon was born 23 December 1823 at Five Corners, Cayuga Co., New York to Theophilus Lyon and Mary Peet. One summer I visited this area with my parents. It was a sleepy little town. We found an old overgrown cemetery, but no names that we recognized as our direct ancestors. I've read microfilms of old church records from this area wherein the Lyon family decided they wanted to break off from their present church and they along with some of their neighbors would go off with their share of the supplies to build their own Church. Luther Peet was the oldest son of Theophilus and Mary Peet Lyon. His mother passed away when he was about 7 years old after her third child was born. His father remarried and had four more children by Amy Clock.
The following is a repeat of information given in my Grandfather Lyon's life story but worth repeating so it won't get lost in the pages.
"My father Luther Peet Lyon was born in Five Corners, New York near the north shore of Ithaca Lake. His father and grandfather were among the very first settlers there. My Father attended Groten Academy in Ithaca, later the school became Cornell University. He read law with a law firm named Feris and Cuhion. In 1848, gold was discovered in California. I do not know just when he went but he went to California by way of the Isthmus of Panama, and I think he spent 10 years there. At the end of that time the Comstock Lode was discovered in Virginia City, Nevada and my father went to Virginia City.
He was a pioneer of both California and Nevada. About the year 1864 he went to Salt Lake City. He met Brigham and Phineas Young. He found it easy to get acquainted with them for when he worked in the Ithaca law office, Brigham Young's stepmother obtained the pension due her through that form of attorneys. I often heard him tell of his mimicking a man named Corwin whom Brigham knew and that Brigham Young slapped his knees and laughed. He read Latter-day Saint literature and became convinced of its truth and was baptized."
Luther Peet Lyon was about 42 years old when he married the 18 year old Elizabeth Harvey Baxter in the Endowment House in Salt Lake City. To this marriage which lasted for 32 years, nine children were born, the last one being born when he was about 61 years old. Four of the nine children died soon after their birth and are buried in the Murray, UT cemetery. Luther Peet passed away in Murray, Utah on September 2, 1897 at the age of 74 and was buried in the cemetery there.
My father, Mack Lyon, thinks Luther Peet Lyon was a carpenter and fell from a ladder to his death. Elizabeth outlived him by 31 years. My father never knew his Grandfather Lyon, but he remembers his Grandmother Lyon coming to Overton to spend the winters with them when he was a boy.
