Son of a Puritan preacher, brother of a Bishop of Llandaff, actor and playwright. He was one of the King's Men and acted in Ben Jonson's 'Cynthias Revels', his name later appearing on the list of actors in the First Folio of Shakespeare's works. He wrote the plays 'A Woman's A Weathercock', 'Amends For Ladies' and collaborated with Massinger on 'The Fatal Dowry'. His mistress was the Duchess of Argyll, and the scandal that broke when she bore his child forced him to leave the stage. He wrote a defence of the stage against attacks by the clergymen of St Saviour's, the parish in which the Rose and Globe theatres stood, and died at the age of 33 in the parish of St Giles.
