Mary Jane was the daughter of William Henry Whealey (1828-1867) and Catherine Van Dine. Mary Jane appears, age 12 in the 1870 US Census for Hempstead NY, in the household of her widowed mother "Catherine V. Whealey" along with her maternal uncle Peter Van Dine, and sisters Henrietta, age 13, and Ann Elizabeth, age 9.
Mary Jane was the first wife of Charles Edward Akley (1857-1935). Together they had the following surviving children:
