Son of John and Mary Gregg. At the age of 20, he enlisted as a Private in Company I, Ohio 167th Infantry on 14 May 1864 and was mustered out on 8 Septeber 1864 in Hamilton, Ohio.

John C. Greeg, Sr. died at his home, 1001 North Meridian Sreet, at noon yesterday after a short illness of paralysis at the age of 71 years. The deceased was known as the father of the Brazil high school, having originated and established the high school in Brazil during his administration as superintendent. He was born in Ohio and came to Brazil in 1877 and took charge of the schools. He continued as head of the schools for 20 years. For the past 12 years he had been a storekeeper in the revenue service.

He married Susan Alsina Welty in 1868 who survived him. He's also survived by two sons and two daughters, John C. Greeg, Jr., of Irvington, Alabama, Dr. Joseph Greeg, Mrs. B.F. Crawford and Mrs. James Simms of this city.

The funeral will be held at the residence Thursday afternoon, interment Cottage Hill Cemetery.
