Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General, US Senator. He was admitted to the bar in 1859 and opened a law practice in Canton, Ohio. At the start of the Civil War, he raised a company of volunteers and was commissioned a Captain in the 19th Ohio Infantry. He served in western Virginia attached to the Army of the Cumberland, was promoted Colonel and led a regiment at the Battle of Shiloh. At the Battle of Lovejoy Station in April 1865, he was so severely wounded and resigned his commission. For distinguished service, he was brevetted Brigadier General of US Volunteers. After the war, he resumed his legal practice and was twice elected district attorney of Stark County, Ohio. He relocated to Omaha, Nebraska and in 1883, was elected as a Republican to the United States Senate, serving until 1895.
