James S. Mathews, 77, of Spruce Lane, passed away after a brief battle with cancer on Monday, February 13, 2012, under the loving care of his family and the staff at the Rose Monahan Hospice Home, Worcester. He was born and raised in Worcester, son of John F. and Ann (Shields) Mathews, and has lived in Holden for the last 45 years.

Jim graduated from Classical High School in Worcester and later from Worcester Polytechnic Institute in 1955. He worked for Sprague Electric in North Adams and Worcester for 10 years, several years at Teradyne Corporation in Boston and in 1978, became a partner in L&M Sales in Marlborough retiring in 1992. He was a member of the Wachusett Area Rotary Club, the Greendale Retired Men's Club, Al-Anon, and a member of St. Mary's Church in Jefferson.

His pastimes were sailing, cooking, gardening, skiing, traveling and vacationing at the family's summer home on Lake Winnipesaukee. He especially loved fine food and dining out with friends.

Jim's beloved wife of 53 years, Clare (Connor) Mathews, died in 2009. He is survived and will be greatly missed by his three sons, Kevin J. Mathews and John A. Mathews, both of Holden and Joseph P. Mathews and his wife Susan of Worcester; two daughters, Mary Sue Kirby and her husband Robert of Jefferson and Maura A. O'Brien and her husband Kenneth of Holden; two sisters, Mary James of Ludlow and Carol Lynch of Westborough; six grandchildren, Joshua and Katherine Mathews, Megan and Julie Kirby, Jonathan and Patrick O'Brien; and many nephews and nieces. A son, Brian Paul Mathews, died in 1989. Two brothers, The Rev. Robert Mathews and John Mathews, predeceased him.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend calling hours from 5 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, February 16, in the Miles Funeral Home, 1158 Main Street (Rte. 122A), Holden. A funeral Mass celebrating Jim's life will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday, February 17, at St. Mary's Church, 114 Princeton Street, Jefferson. Interment will be private in St. Mary's Cemetery, Holden. The family requests in lieu of flowers, donations be made to "Matthew 25", 52 Queen Street, Worcester, MA 01610-1437 (a non-profit organization that provides housing relief to those in need).
