HAYES CENTER -- Keith George Burkert, 76, died Wednesday, Jan. 18, 2006, at his home near Hayes Center.

He was born Jan. 30, 1929, to David R. and F. Marion (Wolverton) Burkert in the home that he now lived in. He attended rural elementary school in Hayes County and graduated from Ag Tech High School in Curtis in 1946.

On Aug. 19, 1950, he married Twila Mintling. To this union, three boys, Korey, Greg and Bart were born. They made their home on a farm north of Hayes Center.

Keith entered the U.S. Air Force in 1952, during the Korean Conflict, and was honorably discharged in 1956. He was a lifetime member of the Veteran's of Foreign War and American Legion Post No. 287.

He was an active member of the Union Congregational Church of Christ in Hayes Center.

He enjoyed sports of all kinds and was a faithful follower of all the games in his hometown. He was a coach, umpire and announced baseball and softball games. He was an avid "Big Red" fan. His most enjoyment came from watching his grandchildren in all of their activities. He always wore a smile and was a friend to all.

He was preceded in death by his parents, David and Marion Burkert, and sister, Corrinne Jones.

Survivors include his wife, Twila Burkert of Hayes Center; three sons, Korey Burkert and wife, Stacey of McCook, Greg Burkert and wife, Tammy of Hershey and Bart Burkert and wife, Penny of Chandler, Ariz.; one brother, Kirby Burkert and wife, Betty of Littleton, Colo.; one brother-in-law, Ted Jones and wife, Dee of Claremore, Okla.; nine grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews; and a host of friends.

In lieu of flowers, memorials can be given in his name.

Funeral services will be Monday, Jan. 23, 2006, 11 a.m., at the Hayes Center High School Gym with Rev. Fay Ann Blaylock officiating. Burial will be in the Hayes Center Cemetery.

Visitation will be Friday, until 6 p.m., Saturday, 9 a.m.-noon, and Sunday 4-8 p.m. The family will receive friends Sunday, 5-7 p.m.
