Birth: 7th of twelve known children, 3rd of three in Brown county, Ohio.

"Joshua D. Haughawout was born in Pennsylvania, being a direct descendant of one of the French Huguenotfamilies that, after the revocation of the Edict of Nantes, migrated first to Holland, from there coming to the United States. After his marriage and the birth of three children in Pennsylvania, he lived for a while in Ohio. In 1844 he followed the emigrant's trail westward, going to Lafayette county, Wisconsin in search of cheaper lands.
Locating near Galena, he entered land, and while improving a farm lived first in a double log cabin, an Indian family occupying the other half of the rude log house. He carried on farming for several years in that county, at the same time being a preacher in the Methodist Episcopal church. His last days were spent in Missouri and his death occurred at the age of seventy-six years of age. He married Amelia Stees, who belongs to a wealthy family of Union county, Pennsylvania. She was a daughter of William Stees, an officer in the Mexican War. She survived him, passing away at the age of eighty-six years, in Missouri. They were parents of twelve children, eight sons and four daughters. The following sons served in the Civil War: Wilbur F.; Frederick S., who was sergeant in Company I Sixteenth Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry, and who was wounded at the battle of Shilo; Henry, a member of the same company as Frederick S., after the war was for eight years was postmaster at Webb City, Missouri, and then attorney at Caney, Kansas; Thomas Bond of the Second Wisconsin Cavalry, at the close of the war located in Missouri, and until his death in Carthage, was one of the more celebrated criminal lawyers of Jasper county, which he served for one or more terms as county attorney; and John W., who belonged to the Twenty-third Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry."

~ did battle at Shiloh in 1862 with older brother Fred in Company I Sixteenth Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry.

Census: 1870, age 27 Mineral township, Jasper county, Missouri with wife & two children, a farmer next listed brother Wilbur F.

Census: 1880, age 37 Greene county, Missouri with wife & four children, a deputy marshal, (Naughawout).

Census: 1900, age 56 Webb City, Jasper county, Missouri with wife, two children, a daughter-in-law & two grandchildren, the Postmaster, for eight years, commencing 21 April 1898, same day Pres McKinley as Congress to declare war on Spain.

Census: 1910, age 67, Caney, Montgomery county, Kansas with wife on State street, a lawyer at land office.

Census: 1920, age 76 Fresno, Fresno county, California with wife & one daughter, a lawyer.

~ he and wife found listed many different years on California voter list, both republicans, at 120 Fresno, once, 1924 in Los Angeles at 236 west Artesia, then in 1932 with her name Ida at 336 College back at Fresno.

~ He was Post Commander of the Atlania Post No 92 of the GAR in Fresno, California at time of his death.
