Death of Mr. John Shuford, The Newton Enterprise 9 May 1912: On May the first, Mr. John M. Shuford died at his son's hospital, where he had gone some time ago, so as to secure the best medical attention possible. For several months he had been very ill with Brights disease.He was the son of Mr. Jacob Shuford and preceded his brother, Mr. Abel Shuford to the grave only two days.Mr. Shuford married Miss Alice, daughter of Capt. M. M Wilson, and besides his wife he leaves two daughters. Mrs. C. H. and Mrs. G. H. Geitner and two sons, Mr. Carol (sic) and Dr. Jake Shuford. Mrs. Shuford is a sister of Mrs. Jane Deal, Mrs. W. W. Trott and Miss Sue Wilson of Newton and Mrs. G. W. Wilson of Startown.Mr. Shuford entered the Confederate service in '62 and served through the war.

SHUFORD, JOHN MARSHALL, Corporal - Born in Catawba County on March 9, 1847. Resided in Catawba County and was by occupation a farmer prior to enlisting at Camp Vance, near Morganton, at age 17, May 21, 1864, for the war. Mustered in as Private. Appointed Corporal on June 11, 1864. Reported present in June-October, 1864. Hospitalized at Wilmington on September 19, 1864, with typhoid fever. Reported absent sick through October 31, 1864. Captured at Fort Fisher on December 25, 1864. Confined at Fort Monroe, Virginia, December 29, 1864. Sent to Point Lookout, Maryland, December 31, 1864. Transferred to Company E, 3rd Regiment N.C. Junior Reserves, January 3, 1865, while a prisoner of war.
