Son of Ransom Alfred Nichols and Phoebe Gilliam.

In 1862 he married Caroline Martha Pennington (widow of Charles Burr). They had 6 children: Jefferson, Martha Jane, Phoebe (died in childhood), James (died in childhood)and twin girls. (After their mother became ill, the twins were left in a friend or family members care. Their father moved the family to Colorado. When came back to Texas to get them, one of the twins had died and the family caring for the other had moved away.) Caroline was admitted to Austin State Mental Hospital, where she spent the rest of her life, dying in 1921.

In 1876 he married Elizabeth Bankston. They had 3 children: Elijah Daniel, and twin daughters. Elizabeth and the twins are believed to have died from measles.

His third wife was Mary Theresa Shoemaker. They married August 7, 1884. They had 12 children. Hiram Calvin, James William, Joseph Jessie, Mable Elvira, Ransom Tyree, Abner Leonard, Effie May, Ray Albert, Violet Anna, Mary Elizabeth (died in childhood), Elmer Richard (died in childhood) and Arthur Earl.

That is a total of 21 children.

Abner died in 1909, when his youngest child was only 3.

Burial: Abner is buried in the Old Weaver Cem. {now Evergreen Cemetary} Carbondale, Colorado. There is an old board marker (no writing) about 20 feet from Hiram Shoemaker's stone. I believe this is where Abner is buried or else real close to the spot. (according to Walt Nichols)
