!OBITUARY:
Alfred Francis (Al) BAILEY June 20th 1926 ~ May 16th 2011 Alfred Francis (Al) Bailey, a native son of the Northwest passed away on May 16, 2011 at the age of 84. Al was a World War II veteran, research scientist, craftsman and Mason, husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. Al was born on June 20th 1926 in Spokane, WA, the only child of Alfred Halsey Bailey, Executive Director of the American Baptist Convention and Leila Skow Bailey, a school teacher. At the age of six, Al's family moved to Raymond, then to Elma, WA. Upon high school graduation in 1944, Al joined the Navy and spent 2 years serving as an Electricians Mate aboard the aircraft carrier USS Saratoga. In 1946, Al enrolled at the University of Washington and graduated in 1950 with a degree in Chemistry. While a student there Al met the love of his life, Joan and they adopted four children between 1953 and 1965. Professionally, Al spent 35 years as a research scientist for the American Can Company, working with food processors through California's central valley, and across the Northwestern United States, often traveling to salmon and crab canneries in Alaska. Al retired from American Can Co. in 1985 and embarked on a second career as a CAD draftsman and teacher for 12 years. Al and Joan developed a passion for travel, and traveled extensively through Europe, Asia and the Middle East over the next 10 years. Al is survived by his wife of 60 years - Joan Bailey and his four children.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held on June 4th, 2011 at 1:00 p.m. at St. Mathews Lutheran Church in Renton where Al was a member for many years. A reception will follow at Luther's Table in Renton. Al, you will be forever loved and missed! In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Northwest Harvest or Luther's Table.
