Hilma Josephine Brown was born in Moline, Illinois on Feb. 16, 1872. The same year she moved with her parents, Fredrick and Mary Brown to Minnesota. they came up the Mississippi River on a steamboat with covered wagon to St. Paul, then on to Clitherall, Ottertail Co., which took three weeks.

She was baptized in the Lutheran faith and confirmed in the Swedish Lutheran Church at Eagle Lake on Oct. 25, 1885, by S.J. Kronberg, pastor. On Oct. 10, 1893, she was married to John A. Carlson at her home at Clitherall. They then made their home in Crookston, where Mr. Carlson was in business. After eight years they moved to the Foy community in Sept. of 1901, where they pioneered, and Mr. Carlson operated a general store and post office for many years. Her husband and two infant sons preceded her in death. Mr. Carlson passed away April 3, 1932.

Mrs. Carlson is survived by nine children, Mrs. Lloyd Dingman (Mildred) of Lomita, Calif., Mrs. Leslie Bergquist (Edith) of Van Nuys, Calif., Elmer of Kelliher, Mrs. Hulda Gaunt of Brea, Calif., Mrs. Hermie Muser (Olive) of San Francisco, Calif., Mrs. A.G. Anderson (Helen) of Brooten, Minn., Mrs. Olaf Stortroen (Dorothy) of Couer d'Alene, Idaho, and Mrs. Melvin Dyrhaug (Alice) of Kelliher. Also twenty grandchildren and twelve great grandchildren.

He was married to Hilma Carlson (28) born February 1872 in Illinois. They were married in 1893 and had been married 7 years. They had 4 children, 3 living. Children (all born in Minnesota): Alice (4) born December 1895, Ruben (2) born January 1898, and Dorthe (2 months) born March 1900.

1910 Census: John A Carlson (48) born about 1862 in Sweden and immigrated 1882, was living in Battle Township, Beltrami, Minnesota. Occupation - retail merchant and farming. He was married to Hilma J Carlson (38) born about 1872 in Illinois. They had been married 16 years. They had born 9 children, 8 living. Children: Alice (14), Ruben (12), and Dorothy (10), Olive (7), Helen (7), Hulda (5), Elmer (3), and Edith (5 months). Living with them was Fritz Johnson (16) born about 1894 in Germany. Occupation - farm laborer.

1920 Census: John Axel Carlson (57) born about 1863 in Sweden and immigrated 1882, was living in Woodrow, Beltrami, Minnesota. Occupation - farming. He was married to Hilma Josephine Carlson (47) born about 1873 in Illinois. Children: Ruben A (21), Dorthe Josephine (19), Olive A (16), Helen Sofie (16), Hulda Emilia (14), John Elmer (12), Edith Marie (10), and Mildred Luela (6).
