Leonard B. White, 73, of Boggs Road, a retired teacher, died at 4:55 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 7, 1989, at Bethesda Hospital following a long illness.

Mr. White retired in 1979 as director of the Educational Resources Center in new Philadelphia. He taught in the Zanesville City Schools and later became the district's school psychologist. He served as principal in the Dresden schools for two years, then was superintendent of Frazeysburg schools for five years. From 1936 to 1940 he taught in several Muskingum County schools and then taught two years in Zanesville elementaries before enlisting in the Army Air Force during World War II.

He graduated from New Concord High School in 1934 and earned a bachelor's degree in education from Ohio University in 1939. He earned a master's degree from University of Oklahoma in 1946, after taking graduate work at University of Pittsburgh. In 1954 he earned a doctor of philosophy degree in guidance from University of Ottawa in Canada and in 1958 he participated in a seminar in research at Ohio State University.

Mr. White was member of Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church, Amity Lodge 5 F&AM and was active in the Air Force Reserves, retiring as a lieutenant colonel. He was also a member of the Gideons, Ohio Retired Teacher Association and the Grange.

He was a delegate to the jurisdictional and general conferences of the United Methodist Church from 1972 to 1988. He was a member of the Conference Board of Church and Society, Conference Episcopacy Committee, District Council of Ministries and was chairman of the local Church Council of Ministries. He was also past conference lay leader.

He was born Aug 21, 1916, in Rix Mills, a son of Frank L. and Minnette Bonifield White.

Surviving are his wife, the former Muriel Black, whom he married on Nov 23, 1940; one son and daughter-in-law, Kurt L and Deborah White of Zanesville; three grandchildren, Katrina, Nathan and Nickolas White; and a foster sister, Mrs. Dean (Ruth) Baughman of Zanesville.

Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today at Bryan Funeral Home and from noon to 1 p.m. Friday at Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church with Rev. Warren Outhwaite officiating. Burial will be in Pleasant Grove Cemetery.
