During the First World War he served in Company B, 102nd Infantry Regiment (26th Division) and was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross for extraordinary heroism in action on September 26, 1918 at Marcheville, France (see War Department General Orders No. 145 dated December 28,1918). The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Sergeant Herbert S. Whedon (ASN: 64763), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company B, 102d Infantry Regiment, 26th Division, A.E.F., at Marcheville, France, 26 September 1918. During an intermittent barrage lasting for two hours Sergeant Whedon placed his men in the best shelter available, but himself remained in observation, refusing to take coyer from terrific artillery fires. He was twice buried by exploding shells while succoring wounded.
