Visitation will take place at 10am on Wed, Sept 25 at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church in Greenwood, followed by a Celebration of Life service at 11am, arrangements by Wilson & Knight Funeral Home.
Dr. Nassar attended medical school at the American University in Beirut, Lebanon where he met and married Carmen, the love of his life, to whom he was married over 63 years. After completing residency in obstetrics and gynecology in Richmond, VA he was stationed at the Greenwood, MS Army Air Base as physician in charge. He then established a private medical practice in 1950 in Greenwood. During more than 45 years of practice, Dr. Nassar was noted as a caring, compassionate, and attentive physician. He twice served as Chief of Staff at the Greenwood-Leflore Hospital.
He and his wife were devout members of Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church, active in charitable work; notably his support (as well as hands-on provision of medical care) for all those in need at the St. Francis Mission in Greenwood. He enjoyed golf at Greenwood Country Club, where he became famous for his double or nothing bets on the 18th hole. He enjoyed Las Vegas casinos during his medical seminars and also betting on games during the football season. He was also a fine fisherman, played the stock market and studied the world of finance. The Nassars greatly enjoyed annual summer vacations including extensive travel all over Central America, Europe and the Middle East. Those trips with his wife and three children remained one of the highlights of his life. He fully enjoyed activities with his 9 grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church (Dr. & Mrs. George Nassar Memorial Fund) in Greenwood or to a charity of the donor's choice.
