Charles Everett Pollitt, 86, of Canton passed away Thursday, June 5, 2014, at his residence.
He was born Oct. 12, 1927, to Arthur and Ethel (Murphy) Pollitt. Charles married Eleanor Hogan-Munson on Nov. 10, 1949, in Canton. She survives.
He also is survived by his two sons, Jeffrey (Jane) Pollitt of Peoria and Patrick (Pat) of Canton; five sisters, Melba Kumer, Peggy McWhorter, Judy Oliver, Marilyn Henderson and Penny Wolfe, all of Canton.
Charles was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Betty; and four brothers, William, Wallace, Arthur and Robert.
He graduated from Canton High School in January of 1945 and enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps, where he served in North China. He was honorably discharged as a staff sergeant.
In 1957, he joined the Illinois State Police, where he served 25 years as a trooper. He was awarded the Governor's Commendation in 1964 for meritorious service by Governor Otto Koerner. He was selected to serve on the 1964 World's Fair detail, guarding the Gettysburg Address in New York City.
He was a 33rd Degree Mason. He belonged to the Scottish Rite Valley of Peoria and the Vermont Masonic Lodge 116.
His hobbies included carving decoys, observing wildlife and reading. He also enjoyed working on crossword puzzles.
Cremation rites have been accorded. Burial of ashes will be in Greenwood Cemetery in Canton at a later date.
