Hubbard Sr. trained and sent six of his seven sons to the Confederate Army, company D, 63rd Regiment 95th regiment N.C. Calvary) originally known as the "Rockingham rangers". During the war he continued to train the 15 and 16 year olds, in case they were called, he didn't want them sent in unprepared. One of his sons, Hubbard Williams Jr. was awarded the medal of honor by the Daughters of the Confederacy.
