Sometime around 1929, she wed Jacob Goossen. They had 5 children; of which 3 died in childhood. Tragically, infant daughter Frieda died at 4 months in 1935 in Russia - she was smothered by a large homeless cat who clawed its way into their hut through a window stuffed with paper. From 1929, she and Jacob and children fled Russia via China and spent about ten years in the western Chinese province of Sinkiang, in the city of Kuldja. However, then came the Sino-Soviet War of the late 1930s, during which the Soviets took control of the province. In 1939, they arrested Jacob and the other men, and sent them back to almost certain execution - they were never heard from again - leaving the women and children to cope by themselves as best they could.
Lili and their two children (Helene and Peter) continued their 17-year trek from Russia to Shanghai, China. Lili was baptized in China in June 1945. She and her children finally immigrated to Canada abt May 1948 via Vancouver, and settled in Yarrow, British Columbia, Canada.
