John was the son of Thomas Letts ((1800-1881) and Eleanor Compton (1803-1873). He was a blacksmith by trade and married twice. First to Sophronia Eckley. Anna (1856-?) and Isabella (1859-1921) were born of this union. Then, in 1890 he married Emma Anne Mathews Nolen Johns. Emma's father, Andrew, and John Letts were friends during the Civil War and Andrew brought the couple together. The children of this marriage were John William, Emma, and Elizabeth. John Jackson was blind at the time of his death.
