Thomas is a native son of Ireland. He emigrated Ireland circa 1839.

He was a grocer in downtown Manhattan.

In 1860 Thomas Cullen, is a Liquor Merchant, 60 years of age with an estimated birth year of 1800-1801. His wife Mary, also an emigrant of Ireland, is age 48. At this time all of their New York born children were present. The oldest is John, an 18 year old lawyer, 16 year old Catherine, Thomas Jr. age 15, James age 12 and Mary Ann age 8. They were residing down at Pitt St., in lower Manhattan.

In 1870 we find the whole family still intact. Their father Thomas now 70, mom Mary reported being age 55. Their children now all grown to adulthood. John was 28, Kate 26, Thomas Jr. 24, James 22, baby Mary a young adult of 18 years. They were still at the 8 Pitt St. address.

Their father Thomas passed away May 29, 1879.

By 1880 the family was still maintaining their grocery store. Mary reported being 65 and the manager of the store. Catherine aged only 4 years in the ten year period, reported being 30 years old, and was charged with keeping the house. Thomas was now referred to as a merchant, age 28. Mary only aged 7 years in the ten year period and now reported being age 25. The oldest son John also lost some years stating being 34. He had married Margaret some 8 years back (c. 1872). She was now 26. Their children are son Thomas 7 and daughter Minnie 5.

The father Thomas was under his doctor's care for his fading health from January 1879 to the day he left us. He was tended to by Dr. Welch of 211 Henry Street, also in downtown Manhattan.

He passed away from his home at 8 Pitt Street within Manhattan's 1st Ward at aprox. 6:00 A.M. on the 29th of May. He at least lived long enough to see his grandchildren as toddlers. I’m sure this brought a smile to tired face.

Thomas was interred in Calvary Cemetery on May 31st, 1879. Grave site plot bought and owned by James Cullen.

James bought the grave site on 03/01/1876. Grave 1 has two (2) burials: 1876 and 1926; Grave site 2 has a total of seven (7) burials: 1876, 1879, 1892 (2Xs), 1909, 1930 and 1934.
