Viki Lynn Simmons, 61, Carthage, MO, passed away Tuesday, June 3, 2014, following an extended illness.

Born March 1, 1953 in Carthage to E.C. and Vivian (Hopper) Simmons, the youngest of 9 siblings.

She is survived by her husband of 32 years, Joy Eisenhauer and sisters, Murlean (Jim) Bolas, Overland Park, KS, Doris (Harry) Greninger, Carthage, Helen (Merv) Box, Kent, WA, Nita (Al) Hartman, Carthage; brother-in-law, Don Porter, Pittsburg, KS; sisters-in-law, Sandy Simmons and Deania Simmons, Carthage.

Survived by many nephews and nieces, she delighted in the large gatherings of the family.

She was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Carolyn Porter; brothers, Ray, Ralph and Elba Simmons, Jr.

Viki was proud of her full, happy life growing up in Carthage. Graduating from High School in 1971, she attended Missouri Southern, graduating from Pittsburg State in 1977 with a degree in Physical Education. Following a move to Grand Junction, Colorado, she began teaching Health and Physical Education, elementary through college.

Her passion was living and teaching a healthy lifestyle. Viki earned a Master's Degree in Kinesiology from the U. of Northern Colorado, Greeley, 1988. A major professional achievement was receiving the Colorado Physical Educator of the Year in 1998. One of her greatest joys was working with her fellow teachers and friends, 3 of her closest buddies receiving the award in separate years.

She relished the bike rides, especially Biking Across Kansas, (BAK) in the summers, which she accomplished 20 times; also, she traveled to the Mideast with her husband, bringing back that experience to her students. Her fun-loving, positive outlook, infectious smile and laugh will be missed; Viki never met a stranger.

Visitation to celebrate Viki's life will be held Wednesday, June 11, at Rollins Creek Clubhouse, 7:00 – 9:00 PM, 1900 Bluebird Way, Carthage.

Private family services will be held at a later date.

Memorial gifts are suggested to Peace Lutheran Church, Joplin, MO or Medicine H.A.T. in care of Knell Mortuary, 308 W. Chestnut, Carthage, MO, 64836.
