Diplomat. Literary Critic. Author. Eagan grew up in Philadelphia where he attended parochial schools and graduated from LaSalle College. He went on to teach English at The Catholic University of America and the University of Notre Dame. Among his books were: The Lyricism of Shakespeare's Comedies (1900), Everybody's St. Francis (1912), Ten Years near the German Frontier, (1919), Confessions of a Book Lover (1922), and his autobiography, Recollections of a Happy Life (1924). He was also active in periodicals, writing for The Saturday Evening Post and editing the New York Freeman's Journal. Along with Irish Parliamentary leader and novelist Justin McCarthy and Irish dramatist Lady Augusta Gregory, Egan edited the anthology Irish Literature inm 1904. Appointed to the position by his friend, President Theodore Roosevelt, he was the United States Minister to Denmark from 1907 to 1917.
