Friends of the 19-year-old who drowned in Mountain Island Lake on Tuesday night searched for him for almost two hours after he went missing. A 911 caller said the group had separated and thought Jaquez D'Andre Hunter-Cathey was playing a joke on them.

When they feared he may have still been in the water, two dove in to try and save him, police reported. However, Cathey never resurfaced.

Cathey died just days before he would have graduated from East Gaston High School.

Born in Rowan County on Dec. 7, 1994, he was the son of Sonja Hunter and Andre Cathey.D'Andre attended Salisbury High School where he was a 2A State Champion Wrestler. He graduated from East Gaston High School in Mt. Holly where he was a 4A State Contender in wrestling and a member of ROTC. A certificate of completion was presented for him having completed training and already taken the oath and been accepted into the United States Marine Corp.He was preceded in death by a grandfather, Willie Smith.He is survived by his mother, Sonja Hunter of the home; father, Andre Cathey of Salisbury; brothers and sisters, Jeremy Hunter of Salisbury, Ashlee Holmes of South Carolina, Destiny Kimble of Charlotte and De'Ante Baker and Ke'Andre Cathey, both of Salisbury; grandparents, Gretchen Hunter, Albert Neely, James McClain, Jerome Allison and Sheila Tarver, all of Salisbury; great-grandmother, Linnie Hunter of Salisbury.
