Born June 15, 1923, in Philadelphia, he was the son of the late Gideon and Blanche (Dean) Cole. He was raised in Northeast Pennsylvania. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II, where he served as Naval Reconnaissance Photographer. He worked for Atlantic Oil Company as an electrical engineer. He owned and operated Cole Studio, Knoxville, Iowa. He also worked on clocks and model trains. He belonged to St. Anthony's Catholic Church, where he also served on the first parish council and on the building committee. He also belonged to the Knights of Columbus. He served in Knoxville on the Parks and Recreation Board and former Chamber of Commerce Board member.
He was preceded in death by his sisters, Mable, Myrtle, Grace; brothers, Fred, Bill and Walt.
Surviving are his wife of 54 years, Sylvia; daughters, Candy Jerkins, Knoxville, Iowa; Cindi Hayes, Mount Pleasant, Iowa; Lynn Witzenburg, Des Moines, Iowa; seven grandchildren; brother, Stanley, Tampa, Fla.; and many other family members and friends from Northeast Pennsylvania.
