Lifetime Aberdeen resident Lela Bowerman Kirkwood, 91, passed away peacefully at her home on Saturday, May 28, 2011, with her family by her side. She was born in Aberdeen, Washington, on September 7, 1919, to Clyde and Mossie (Tyndell) Bowerman. She attended Aberdeen grade schools, graduating from J.M. Weatherwax High School in 1938, and eventually from Grays Harbor Business College. During the war she worked for Consolidated Aircraft Corporation in San Diego. On October 17, 1942, she married Charles C. "Tod" Kirkwood. Lela worked prior to starting a family after which she volunteered and devoted her life to raising her family. She was active at St. Mary's School and Church as well as various community clubs. Her love, her time, her laughter, and the security of knowing she was always there for us were her most valuable gifts. Lela held great pride in the fact that Moon Island Airport was renamed Bowerman Field in honor of her brother, Lt. Robert C. "Bob" Bowerman, after he was lost during the Korean War.

Lela is survived by her daughters, Cathy (Joe) Shapansky, Janet Mana of Cosmopolis and LeAnne (Gordy Gaidrich) Kirkwood of Olympia and her son, John "Jack" Kirkwood of Hoquiam; grandchildren, Joe, Josh and Jacob (Bridget) Shapansky, Jeff (Katrina) Kirkwood and Gina (Damon) Gleason, Mitch Kellogg, and Shae and Sadie Mana; great-grandchildren, Parker and Pierce Gleason and Jaden, Davin and Asaiah Kirkwood; her brother and sister-in-law, Retired Judge John and Delores Kirkwood, two nephews, two nieces, seven great-nephews, a great-niece and a large extended family. Also, her caregivers, Sue Phillips, Barb Noll, Laurie Franich and Kelly Jovanovich, who gave her great care during the last several years of her life.

Lela was preceded in death by her husband, Tod, in 1994; her parents; her brother, Bob; and her son-in-law, Tim Mana, in 2011.

A memorial graveside service will be held in her honor on Friday, June 3, 2011, at 3:00 p.m. at the Wynoochee Cemetery in Montesano. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Harbors Health and Hospice, 201 7th St., Hoquiam, Wash. 98550.
