At age 19, Emma married Frank Thomas Smith on July 22, 1867 in Franklin, LA, the parish seat. They had four sons before Emma died at the young age of 32. There was no record of her death but it is likely that she died during the Yellow Fever epidemic of Morgan City/Berwick of 1878/79.
The first public cemetery in the region was established in 1878 in Morgan City. Early records are sparse but a copy of an old handwritten cash receipt was found showing Emma's father-in-law (Wm Smith) buying a plot for $5 in Dec 1878 and Emma's sister Annie buying the plot next to that one on the same day for $5. These records imply that Emma was laid to rest in Dec 1878 in what is now Morgan City Cemetery. There is however no marker remaining.
