Mary Kay grew up in Kansas City, Kansas, was a 1964 graduate of Bishop Ward High School and received her degree in teaching at Kansas State university.

She came to Olympia in 1968 to teach at Roosevelt Elementary. Mary Kay also taught for the Pe Ell School District. She was in the Tri City Art League in Kennewick and sold water color and oil paintings. She had a plant business while in Kansas City and also sold antiques. She made and sold life size, soft sculptured mannequins. She also made and sold precious metal jewelry and porcelain earrings. Mary Kay was also an accomplished china painter and made many porcelain and ceramic pieces. Her latest works were in Raku finish. She had made, displayed and sold art pieces at towns along the Washington and Oregon Coast. She had been a water aerobics instructor at local fitness centers. Although cancer took her life, her spirit lives on in her art work and in our memories of her zest for living life.

Her husband and children scattered her ashes over the ocean on Christmas Day 2001. It was perfect! The breeze was blowing from the shore to the sea, the tide was going out. It was quite sunny for this part of the country and the scenery was exquisite, everything that Mary Kay loved.
