"To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven:
A time to be born, and a time to die".
- Ecclesiastes 3: 1,2
ODESSA William Kenneth Herbert passed from this life after a brave battle with cancer.
He entered earthly life March 20, 1936, and passed to eternal life on January 25, 2006. The son of William E. and Madilene Smith; Ken was adopted by Robert M. Herbert in 1949.
Kenneth married Katherine Sue Jeffries on September 1, 1956 and was married to her for 44 years until she preceded him in death in 2000. Also preceding Kenneth in death were his own father William Smith in 1948, his mother Madilene Herbert in 2003, and his dad Robert Herbert in 2005.
Many loved ones survive him: wife Carolyn Herbert of Midland; son Kelly Herbert and wife Janie of Katy; daughter Holly Wesson and husband Jeff of Midland; step daughter Suella McCarty of Lubbock. So loved by him were his grandchildren Levi and Sarah Jane Herbert, Micah, Jacey, Craig and Cody Wesson, and Victoria McCarty. Kenneth is also survived by a special cousin Patricia Sibley and cousins Stanley Reynolds, Morris Young and wife Reba.
Kenneth Herbert was an extraordinary person with a long list of accomplishments. He graduated from Odessa High School in 1954 and received a BBA from Texas Tech in 1961. He founded Marklyn Controls and Supply in the garage of his home in 1967 and grew the business to seven locations, servicing multi states and various industries until his retirement in 1995.
He was a life long member of Eisenhower church of Christ where he generously served as Deacon and later as Elder. Kenneth took great joy teaching Bible classes for the teenagers and young adults. He also served as an interpreter of the Bible to the deaf. He will also be remembered for his devoted service to the bus ministry.
Ken eventually braved the frailty of his health by overachieving in other aspects of his life. He took up motorcycling in later years, traveling the southwest, and eventually joined the Miata Club. Well renowned for his love of Sue's biscuits, Isabel's tamales, and breakfast at supper time. He had incredible drive and ambition and was generous to all including family, friends, and even strangers. He instilled in his children "if it is worth doing, it is worth doing well." Although Kenneth was driven to success, his first desire was to spend eternity with his Savior.
The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday, January 27, 2006, at the Eisenhower church of Christ, officiated by Burt Groves. Interment will follow at Resthaven Memorial Gardens in Midland.
