From the 18 Jan 1900 Van Wert, Ohio, Republican: "Another pioneer resident of this county has passed over the hillside of time into eternity. Samuel Shockey died Wednesday morning, at his home in Union township, of dropsy, aged seventy years. He had been a resident of this county for upward of fifty years and was highly respected."
From the 1/18/1900 Van Wert, Ohio, Democrat: "Another pioneer has been called to his reward. Samuel Shockey, died at his home in Union township, yesterday morning, of dropsy, aged about 70 years. He had been a resident of the county since the early 60s and enjoyed the respect and esteem of all who knew him."
From the 25 Jan 1900 Van Wert, Ohio, Republican; "S. A. Shocky, [sic] a pioneer and ex-solder of blue of the war of the rebellion, died on the 17th inst. of heart trouble, aged 69 years, 9 months and 21 days. Funeral preached at the house by Rev. Bell, of Dixon, on the 19th. Interred in Woodland cemetery. The friends of the deceased have our sympathy in their sad bereavement. The boys in blue are passing away one by one, in a few more years there will be none left to tell the story of that great and horrible war."
