Enlisted in Company A of the 36th Illinois Infantry in September 1861, after having moved to Kane County, Illinois from Grand Rapids, Michigan. He served three years, being promoted from private to sergeant during that time. After the war, he lived in Elgin, Illinois for about three years, where he was a member of the G.A.R. and filed for an invalid's pension. After living in Missouri for some time, he finally settled in Davenport, Iowa. He sent his regrets for a reunion of the 36th Illinois Infantry in Elgin in 1908. His daughter Maude sent a telegram to the commander of the Elgin G.A.R. post to inform him of her father's death in 1916.
