Longtime Lodi figure Dwight Alquist is dead
Dwight Alquist, a prominent Lodi businessman, died Monday following a short illness. He was 66.
A native of Turlock, Mr. Alquist moved to Lodi in 1947. He purchased Fink Cleaners and changed the name to Guild Cleaners, moving the business to its current location in 1959.
During the 1950s he sat on the California State Board of Dry Cleaning. From 1955 to 1958, Mr. Alquist was director of the California Dry Cleaners Association and fro 1960 to 1961, he served as the association's president.
From 1964 to 1967, he was a director of the National Institute of Dry Cleaning and was president of the national organization in 1970.
Mr. Alquist was made an honorary citizen of Texas in 1970 because of his efforts and work in the dry cleaning industry.
He owned Meaders Cleaner of San Francisco from 1969 to 1977 and was part owner, with his son, in the Village Cleaners in Stockton from 1979 to 1981. Mr. Alquist was well known throughout the world in the dry cleaning industry.
He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and was a member of the American Legion Post No. 22. Mr. Alqust was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Lodi, the Lodi Masonic Lodge No. 256 F. & A.M., Scottish Rite Bodies of Stockton, Ben Ali Temple of Shrine, Tokay Shrine Club.
Mr. Alquist was a former member of the Lodi Hi 12 Club and the Lodi Rotary Club.
He is survived by his wife, Viva Alquist of Lodi; son, Jack Alquist sisters, Dorothy Johnson of Turlock, Lois Alquist of San Francisco; brother, Richard Alquist of Turlock.
