Elizabeth Haden Cain [22] married Wyatt Powell [27] in 1844. She was 16 and he was 21.
Children by Wyatt Powell:
Ascenith Powell, 1845–1845
Nancy Powell, 1847–1860
Margaret E Powell, 1849–1913
Sarah Delilah Powell, 1851–1882
After Wyatt's death in 1852, on 1 Oct 1854, in Clarksville, Davie, North Carolina at age 26 to William G Brown. Marriage performed by P. H. Cain, Justice of the Peace - Elizabeth's uncle.,
Elizabeth and William Brown had 4 children [shown in 1870 census:
Mary L, 14 [b. 1856];
Martha L 12, [later found as Alice] [b. 1858;
....[there may have been at least 1 or more children between this time] ...
Daniel J 6; and
John R Lee 2.
In 1880 census – last one before Elizabeth died two years later - the family consisted of:
William G. Brown - 53
Elizabeth Brown – 54
Mary L. Brown - 24
Alice Brown - 21
Danl J. Brown – 16
R Brown] b. 1867] – 11 - later found as John R.
The birth's are consistent with the date of the remarriage and determined to be Elizabeth's after her marriage to Mr. Brown.
Any children from the Brown union are considered to be half-siblings.
There is a bit of a mystery here: Why was Elizabeth buried in the POWELL family cemetery? She had been married to Brown for many years - a lot longer than to Wyatt. Only speculation. but - it may be that an older daughter, Margaret - the only surviving of her POWELL children - instrumental in the decision or perhaps she had already made a family request that she be buried there.
Cemetery [and headstones found] show she is buried next to Wyatt.
Elizabeth is buried in Powell Family Cemetery.
