Joyce will be remembered as a tender and loving sister, wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and a dear friend to many. She was born May 17, 1925 in Plymouth, Wisconsin, to Franklin Hollenberger and Ruth Wittkopp Hollenberger. The oldest of six children, Joyce loved and supported her younger brothers and sister throughout her life. Joyce graduated at the top of her class from Plymouth High School in 1942. After graduation, she worked for her aunt, Margaret Wittkopp in the Treasurer's office in the city of Wauwatosa. Joyce married Bruce Elmer Burghardt of Milwaukee, Wisconsin on January 14, 1950. The family moved to Waupaca, Wisconsin in 1959, then relocated to Grand Chute in 1963 to enable their youngest daughter Heidi to attend the School for the Deaf in Oshkosh. Joyce was an active member of First English Lutheran Church in Appleton for 50 years. A dedicated member of her church family, Joyce was active in Circle, Alter Guild and more important, served as a prayer partner, friend, and source of joy and support to fellow members of all ages. Her commitment to learning and witnessing continued throughout her life, as evidenced by her completion of the ELCA Lay School Ministry program at the age of 77. She also completed two years of intensive Bible studies and was qualified by the Bethel Series to teach adult Biblical studies at the age of 80.
