Andrew was the son of Sarah Richardson and David Chitwood. He married Sarah McCoy on 15 May 1859 and they had eight known children: Joel, James Harvey, Ailcy Ann, Malinda Caroline, Cora Dell, Adaline, Amanda and Samuel.
