FRANK BONK

Frank Bonk Sr., 94, (photo), one of Manitowoc county's oldest residents who lived in the Two Rivers area nearly 80 years, died Thursday at the home of his son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Fred (Ole) Mertens at 2115 Polk St., Two Rivers, with whom he had been residing for many years. He had been in failing health for the past two years.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at the Deja & Martin Funeral Chapels, Two Rivers, and at 10:30 a.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, the Rev. Joseph Gabryszek officiating. Interment will be in Holy Cross Cemetery, Two Rivers.

Mr. Bonk was born in Posen, Germany, on April 27, 1861, a son of the late Jacob and Mary Bonk. At the age of seven the family brought him to this country, settling in Milwaukee. A few years later the family moved to a farm in the Town of Two Creeks. In 1885 he married Johanna Gonia in Two Rivers and the couple engaged in farming for a few years, coming to Two Rivers in the late 1880s where Mr. Gonia (sic) took employment at the old Mann Brothers pail factory. More than 50 years ago he entered the tavern business and erected a building at 21st and Jefferson Streets, now the Gonia tavern. Several years later he disposed of the business and took over a tavern on Two Rivers' east side, now the Claude Lodi establishment. He retired about 30 years ago. His wife preceded him in death 23 years ago. Mr. Bonk was one of the organizers of the Sacred Heart parish at Two Rivers and was one of Two Rivers' best know skat players.

Surviving Mr. Bonk are six daughters, Mrs. Fred Mertens, Miss Martha Bonk, Mrs. James Schauer and Mrs. Ben Dombrowski of Two Rivers, Mrs. Frank Lassek of Eau Claire and Mrs. Robert Gillespie of San Diego, Calif.; two sons, John and George Bonk of Two Rivers; 16 grandchildren and 30 great grandchildren.

Friends may call at the funeral chapel after 7 p.m. Saturday where the Rosary will be recited at 8 p.m. Sunday.
