John P. Bonk, 68, of 1008-24th St., Two Rivers, for years a motion picture projectionist, who once was in partnership with a late brother in the operation of the old Empire Theater at Two Rivers, died at 8 a.m Sunday, at Two Rivers Municipal Hospital where he had been a patient for a week.

Funeral services will be held at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Deja & Martin, Inc., Funeral Chapel, Two Rivers, and at 10 a.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Two Rivers, the Rev. Joseph Gabryszck officiating. Interment will be in Holy Cross Cemetery, Two Rivers.

John Paul Bonk was born in Two Rivers on April 6, 1888, a son of the late Frank and Jennie Gonia Bonk. After attending the Two Rivers schools he became a cigar maker in his youth. Several years later he joined his late brother, Frank Bonk, who died three years ago at Ripon, in the operation of the old Empire Theater in the Empire Block. He also was a member of the Bonk Brothers orchestra, playing a trombone, which was the pit orchestra for the vaudeville shows at the theater. At the Empire he operated the motion picture projectors, a field which he pursued for well over 40 years, working later at the Rivoli at Two Rivers, and the Capitol, Strand and Mikadow at Manitowoc. Mr. Bonk also worked continuously for 35 years at the Hamilton Mfg. Co., Two Rivers, 34 years of which were spent in the company's wood type shop. He retired in May of 1953. A "30-year club" member at Hamilton, he was also a member of the Manitowoc Motion Picture Projectors Union.

Surviving Mr. Bonk are his wife, the former Mabel Hickox of Fish Creek, Wis., whom he married in 1916; six daughters, Mrs. Joseph Gajdys, Mrs. Frederick Puls, Mrs. Leonard Rybarczyk and Mrs. Roger Puls of Two Rivers, Mrs. Donald Kraftcheck of Manitowoc, and Mrs. Donald Brault of Milwaukee; three sons, George Bonk of Milwaukee, Dr. Wallace Bonk, an instructor at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, Mich., and James Bonk of Two Rivers; six sisters, Mrs. Fred (Ole) Mertens, Miss Martha Bonk, Mrs. James Schauer and Mrs. Ben Dombrowski of Two Rivers, Mrs.
Frank Lassek of Eau Claire, and Mrs. Robert Gillespie of Long Beach, Calif., a brother, George Bonk of Two Rivers, and nine grandchildren. A son, Richard Bonk, died four years ago.

Friends may call at the funeral chapel after 2 p.m. Tuesday where the Rosary will be recited at 8 p.m. Tuesday.
