Civil War Union Army Soldier. He was mustered in as a Private in Company C, 1st New Jersey Militia on April 30, 1861, and served through the July 1861 First Bull Run Campaign before being honorably mustered out on July 31, 1861. He was then mustered in as a Private in Company B, 8th New Jersey Volunteer Infantry on August 29, 1861. Promoted Principal Musician, Field and Staff, on April 26, 1865, he was honorably mustered out on July 17, 1865
On September 16, 1861 his wife, Jennie Hicks, filed for a US Army Widow's Pension (Application #526903, Certificate #358148, NJ.
Asher was born c 1839 in Springfield, NJ., son of George Hicks and Elizabeth Nichols . He M 1st Martha Benson who died in 1875. Their children were Harry, Benjamin G, Horace and Anna.
He m 2nd Jennie F Tucker, dau of Thomas Tucker and Jane Norris. Their children were: Syndonia, Charles, Ida , Harry, Anna Maude.
