Cumberland Presbyterian Minister

Son of Maj. James Cowan and father of Dr. J.B. Cowan. Rev. Cowan supported his family after his father's death in 1815 and educated himself. In 1822 he became a clergyman of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church and as preacher, orator and scholar was famous throughout the central South. His wife was Nancy Clements, daughter of Maj. Benjamin Clements and Sarah Brazeale of South Carolina.
