Officer is Slain at Two Rivers

A 36-year-old Two Rivers man was scheduled to make his initial appearance in Manitowoc County Court Branch 2 Wednesday after being charged with first degree murder in the slaying of a Two Rivers police officer.
Taken into custody about 2:30 a.m. Wednesday was Robert J. Buretta, 1420 Glenwood St., Two Rivers. Officer Thomas Dodge, 24, 1029-31st St., Two Rivers, was killed with a shotgun blast when he and Officer William Bero went to Buretta’s upstairs apartment after he walked away from the Two Rivers Community Hospital.
Dodge was killed with the second of two blasts from the 12 gauge shotgun, Dist. Atty Thomas Rusboldt said. The shots were fired through a rear door leading into Buretta’s kitchen.

Dodge and Bero were sent to Buretta’s apartment about 2:18 a.m. after Mrs. Betty McFadzen of Two Rivers Community Hospital called police that Buretta was missing from his hospital room. Police Chief Albert Kopstad described the events leading up to the shooting this way:

The officers arrived at Buretta’s residence and walked up the stairs to the apartment. They walked to the door and knocked. Buretta then unloaded with the shotgun blasts, hitting Dodge. Both Dodge and Bero then ran back to their squad car to call for assistance. Dodge collapsed in the street.

Dodge who joined the Police Dept. just six months ago, was a 1969 graduate of Roncalli High School. He attended the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh from 1969 to 1972. He worked at Mirro Aluminum Co. prior to joining the police force. Dodge was married and he and his wife, Theresa, had one son. The Two Rivers Police Dept. contacted the Manitowoc County Sheriff-Traffic Dept. at 2:42 a.m., requesting that some help be rushed to the vicinity of 14th and Lowell Streets where it was reported that an officer was down. Officers Michael Bushman, Kenneth Petersen, Alan Halverson and Thomas Markvart were dispatched. Halverson and Markvart later transported Mrs. Dodge to Two Rivers Community Hospital.
