Supervisor Louis Kumbalek Sr. Dies Suddenly
HEART ATTACK PROVES FATAL ON SATURDAY

Was One of Two Rivers First Citizens; Funeral Will Be Held Thursday Supervisor Louis Kumbalek Sr., 55, 1810 Washington street, a member of one of Two Rivers' first families and one of the city's best known citizens, dropped dead on the ice of West Twin river shortly after three o'clock Saturday after-noon, a victim of a heart attack. He had been assisting the Schultz Ice company in the annual harvest of ice.

Mr. Kumbalek, never known to be sick throughout his life, was stricken when at work freeing the blocks of ice to be conveyed to the ice house, several hundred feet from the shore. Edward Schultz, president of the firm, saw Mr. Kumbalek fall to the ice from ashore and quickly summoned Dr. G.A. Rau. In the meantime emergency neasures were taken by one of the fellow workmen, Claude St. Pierre, using artificial respiration methods without avail. Dr. Rau, who reached the scene in less then five minutes, found Mr. Kumbalek dead upon arrival. He pronounced the death due to a heart attack. The remains were taken to the funeral home of Beduhn and Goetz.

Funeral Thursday
Funeral services will be held Thursday morning at nine o'clock in St. Luke's Catholic church, where Mr. Kumbalek was one of its most acitve members. The Rev. Father C.V. Hugo will officiate. Interment will be in Holy Cross cemetery. The remains can be viewed at the Beduhn and Goetz funeral home from ten o'clock
Tuesday morning until the time of the funeral. Mr. Kumbalek's only hobby was hard work in providing a livelihood for a large family. At the age of 14 he stated to work in the blacksmith shop in the old Two Rivers Manufacturing company, and worked at numerous other places always endeavoring to better himself, and make the family surroundings more comfortable. He was honest and conscientious and held numerous trusted positions in church organizations and as a city official.

Was Supervisor
For more than seven years he was president of the Two Rivers branch of the Catholic Knights of Wisconsin, and more than a dozen years as treasurer of the St. Joseph's society of St. Luke's church. He was in his second year as representative of the fifth ward on the county board of supervisors. In 1905 he was a member of the police force, and for the past 14 years conducted a milk depot and grocery store at 1810 Washington street. For more than two years he was the local distributor for the Kingsbury Breweries and the Banquet Distributing company of Manitowoc.

Supervisor Kumbalek was born in Two Rivers on March 12, 1878, a son of the late Anton and Anna Chloupek Kumbalek.

His birthplace was the present site of the Schroeder Bros. department store, where his father, prominent in Two Rivers' early history, operated a hotel, saloon and harness shop for many years. Thirty-three years ago last May 22 he was married to Hattie Landt, daughter of the late Ernest and Fredericka Landt, pioneer residents of the Rangeline in the town of Two Rivers. The marriage was solemnized in St. Luke's church here.
Besides his widow, Mr. Kumbalek leaves a daguther, Mrs. Elizabeth Lemmer of Milwaukee, and six sons, Louis and Cornelius, both of this city, Norbert of Appleton, and Sylvester, Roland and Ernest, all at home. He also leaves five sisters, Sister Esther of St. Cloud, Wis., Sister Margaret of Hayes, Kansas, Mrs. Mary Smith of Owosso, Michigan, Mrs. Julia Clocksin of Milwaukee, and Mrs. Rose Pilotte of Chicago, and three brothers, Benjamin and Anton of Manitowoc, and Irving Kumbalek of Chicago. There are also 13 grandchildren.
