Minnie Gilbert, age 84, a longtime resident of Two Rivers, currently residing with her daughter, (private), died peacefully Saturday morning, Jan. 17, 2009, surrounded by her loving family.

Minnie was born Oct. 22, 1924, in Anchorage, Alaska, a daughter of the late Peter and Cora (Nicolai) Kallander, and granddaughter of the late Chief Nicolai of Nicolai Village on Pt. Possession, Alaska. She attended schools in Anchorage, and married Roy C. Gilbert in Anchorage on June 13, 1942, while he was serving with the United States Army. Roy preceded her in death on November 28, 1995.

Minnie was retired from Paragon Electric Co., after many years of service, and after retirement she worked part-time at Mishicot Dry Cleaning, with her daughter, (private). Minnie enjoyed watching the Green Bay Packers, playing bingo, gardening, and loved to travel. Above all, she enjoyed the time spent with her family, especially with her many grandchildren.

(Survivors omitted for privacy.)

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by one son, Dennis Gilbert; one daughter, Mary Ann Johnson; five grandchildren, Charles J. Parworth, Jessie and Frank Zietlow, and Shawn and Scott Popp; three brothers, Gilbert, Julius, and Peter Kallander; and one sister, Mary.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 21, 2009, at St. Peter the Fisherman Catholic Church, Two Rivers. Officiating at the Mass of Christian Burial will be the Rev. William G. O'Brien, with burial to follow in Holy Cross Cemetery, Two Rivers.

The family will greet relatives and friends at the Deja & Martin Funeral Chapels, 1506-18th St. Two Rivers, from 5 until 8 p.m. Tuesday evening, Jan. 20, 2009.

A parish prayer service will be held at 7:30 p.m., led by Fr. Bill. Visitation will continue at the church, Wednesday morning, after 9 a.m. until the time of Mass at 10:30 a.m.

Minnie was a wonderful, loving mother, grandmother and best friend to all. She will be greatly missed by her family, relatives and friends.

The Gilbert family would like to extend a very special thank you to (private) and his staff; and to (private), from Aurora VNA Hospice for the excellent care and compassion given to Minnie. Many thanks also to Fr. Bill O'Brien, for his prayers and comforting words during Mom's final days. Your kindness will always be remembered.

This is not our land; we are but caretakers. What we take from the Earth we must put back. What we put out we get back. We live in God's country and we are proud to call it Home.
